Are all humic acids or humic extractions the same?

Not all extractions are the same.The biggest difference between one company and another, making a Humate product, is the time and care that it takes to make good extractions of the short chain fulvic acids, as we deliver. Time is money, therefore many rush the process. They may have a high level of humic acids, but the short chain fulvic acids, that our Liquid Humates contain the highest of content, take the most time,  to yield the highest fulvic acid level possible.

The term “humus” has been known to science for over two hundred years. Humate is the dark brown material found only in the New Mexico and Colorado 4-Corners region , that is mined from the earth , and would turn into hard coal , if was left in its current state, for another few 100,000 Years.

Humates in soil are a treasury where nutrients are stored and supplied to the plants when needed.

At the right moment, when a vegetable cell needs it, electrons supply the energy to the cell and increase the cell’s own energy. These two particular examples illustrate only partially the humates’ influence. An important role is played not only by the existence of functional groups but also by their mutual location. Nature made sure they were located in a way that allowed the humic acids and ions of metals to interact in the most optimal direction for plant development

The system
Humate-plant can be characterized by two independent processes that are very important to plants’ growth and development. The first process is the increase in the cell’s energy and the intensification of ion-exchange process, as a result of it.

 Nature made sure there were quinoid groups in a humic acid structure. Electrons of the four conjugated p-bonds are able to capture a quantum of solar energy accompanied by a transition to a higher energy level. They accumulate the energy and supply it to the cell when needed. It intensifies the ion-exchange process.

 As a result, the root system develops more rapidly, and special ferments form to improve the plants’ resistance to unfavorable conditions, such as drought and frost. These ferments also assist the process of nitrogen assimilability that does not lead to the formation of nitrates. At the same time, the synthesis of chlorophyll, sugars, vitamins, essential amino-acids, and oils accelerates. 

The second process is the increase in penetrability of the cell membrane. (T. L. Senn and A. R. Kingman, 1973.) It facilitates the penetration of nutrients into the cell and accelerates the respiration of the plants. It is important to point out that this process is rather elective. For example, the penetration of potassium ions increases a hundred times while sodium penetration increases ten times, which favorably influences plants’ nourishment.

A particularly large number of processes can be observed in system humate-soil. The humic acids are natural complex generators. All essential microelements, being the variable-valence metals, form chelate complexes with the humates. This is a determinant for plants’ nourishment.

As for heavy metals, such as lead, mercury, chrome, cadmium, and others, their penetration into fruit and further into the human and animal organisms leads to serious illnesses. The humates form insoluble compounds with heavy metals, which creates the barrier for their penetration into the cell.

We have already mentioned the important role of interaction between the humates and metals, which results in formulation of complexes and insoluble salts. It was discovered that this process is very important not only for nourishment of the plants but also for soil structuring. The humate reacts with potassium, magnesium, aluminum, and iron that are always present in soil, and forms organomineral bridges that bond mechanical particles of the soil into a life-sustaining structure for microorganisms.


In a foliage application, Liquid Humate maybe increase up to one gallon per acre. At two quarts per acre increased forage production has been as high as 150%, the yield potential will depend upon how much NPK is tied up in the soil and amount of available moisture. The more NPK is tied up in the soil, the greater the yield potential. Green back after harvesting the grass has been up to 5 days quicker on the treated forages. At the one-gallon rate, Liquid Humate can be applied on every other cutting rather then applying two quarts per cutting. Producers have reported higher yields with more moisture left over for the next cutting. We suggest for best results is to have the soil analyzed and add the needed NPK based upon the soil analysis and the need for your crop.

How does Liquid Humate increase forage production? Normally up to 30% of the NPK that is applied to the soil gets tied up before the plant can use it. Liquid Humate can aid in releasing it to the plant. When Liquid Humate enters the plant photosynthesis is increased. As a result more carbon dioxide is converted into plant sugars in the sap, thereby increasing the energy level of the sap. The plant uses the high-energy sap for plant functions, growth and most important to feed the microbes at the root level. The friendly soil microbes receiving the high-energy sap multiply faster and breaks down the compounded or tied up NPK making them available to the plant. Another indirect function is that the organic matter of the soil will increase from the waste material the friendly microbes produce. The greatest increase over controls is in soils with an organic level below 5%.

The recommendations per acre are very affordable with excellent benefits. 2 to 3 gallons per acre produce noticeable results, when diluted with water for spraying disbursement application .

If germinating seeds in plant cubes , and/or nourishing plants,  in a shallow water base, before moving individual plants to larger grow spaces,  dilute the Liquid Humate by equal amount of water , and add the diluted Humate directly into the shallow water bath in bottom of growth tray .

If adding other ingredients, Always do a jar test when mixing different ingredients together to insure that they are compatible together and follow label directions on all ingredients.

Liquid humate
Liquid Humate was developed for foliar feeding and seed treatment. The general rate per acre is from 16 to 32 ounces per acre. It contains all the fulvic extractions plus some of the plant active humic extractions as well. General applications are generally less then a dollar per acre. Excellent results occur when applied to early new growth. Liquid Humate stimulates root development followed by more vigorous plant growth. When Liquid Humate is mixed at the rate of 16 ounces per 100 gallon in a tank mix, the response of other ingredients in the foliar application is improved. Many have found that they can cut the application rates back on herbicides by 20%. Humate is our top selling product. Liquid Humate is available in 5 gallon buckets, 55 gallon drums, and 275 gallon totes. 

Concentrated Liquid Humate
Concentrated Liquid Humate is designed for treating the soil. Helps soils that are low in organic matter, helps corps utilize plant nutrients in low pH soils. Concentrated Liquid Humate increases the cation exchange of the soil which helps in the exchange of plant nutrients from the soil to the plant. Concentrated Liquid Humate will help bring the soil structure back and aid in providing an environment for friendly micro life with in the soil. Normal application rates are 64 ounces per acre and up. Concentrated Liquid Humate is available in 5 gallon buckets, 55 gallon drums, and 275 gallon totes.

Can be applied anytime, early spring and fall are the two best times to apply, 

Dry humate is available, bulk, 2000 lb tote bag, and 50 lb bags. Apply from 100 to 1000 pounds per acre.

Mycorrhizal Products
Mycorrhizal fungi live on the roots of plants. Mycorrhizal fungi and humates work hand in hand with each other. These fungi generally make phosphorus and nitrogen available to the plant. This product works best when applied directly to the roots. Excellent plant response has been reported with seed treatment. Mycorrhizal fungi is available in 20 pound bags. Gro-Bac soil amendment is a fermented product that provides special nutrients for developing and boosting friendly soil bacteria. Works very well when included in an over all program with all of the above products. It can be applied any time, but early spring and fall are best. The benefits of the four point program, yields get stronger each year. The soil structure improves. The cation exchange will improve. Where as on other programs, yields tend to be good for a few years and then they start to drop off. Insects and other plant problems seem to become greater. In this program things improve and signs of problems do not appear as great and generally they will work out naturally or with less expense of correcting the problem. Insects and plant diseases are nature's way of eliminating a crop that is no longer compatible to the environment. Our four point program helps to keep the proper environment for good plant health and profitable production. Any crop harvested from the soil is removing nutrients; we must replace them as we use them. Nutrient exchange in the soil requires a micro life to maintain this exchange. 

The big question is how much will our program increase yields? Remember the basics, the nutrient that is least meeting the need is the most limiting factor for production. Our products do two things, first it helps the plant to cope with nutrient deficiencies, Secondly, and our product's stimulates the plant to use the nutrients that are available very efficiently. How great the nutrient deficiencies are determine yield potentials, an example, water is one nutrient, no water no yield, some water some yield and we can improve on that little water and so on. And in ideal conditions, the limiting factor is the bred in yield ability of the plant, we can improve that by stimulating the plant even to better production. With our low cost, we become an insurance factor that producers need to give them the edge. 

The expense of this program is one that will make most all crops more profitable. Even in dry land conditions where yields are low due to low rain fall other then desert conditions, our products will help increase production and improve profits. We believe if it does not make money, do not do it. 

Our goal is to help all of agriculture to achieve excellent results in the least expensive manner and in an effective profitable way. Our products will help make the high plains dry land wheat farmer more profit to the vegetable grower in the valley more profit. It is for this reason many are now adding our products to complete their program. 

General foliar application for Liquid Humate

Early in the growing period or when new plant growth is taking place with enough leaf present to absorb a foliar application, apply from 16 to 32 ounces per acre. We have found that following the first application with a second application in about ten days of 16 to 32 ounces per acre improved results even more. Two smaller applications are better then one large application.

If the crop is for hay or pasture, it is very important to do your best to do the second early application, the hay production for the rest of the season is just better. Then after each cutting apply 16 to 32 ounces per acre when there is sufficient new growth for foliar application. If it is for pasture, apply 16 ounces every 30 days if you have good growing conditions. If the growing conditions are unfavorable such as being too dry for plant growth, do not apply.

For small grain such as wheat, barley, oats apply 24 ounces on the first application after the plant has sufficient amount of foliage to absorb a foliar application. A second application should be applied just before the plant starts to joint. This will help improve fill and test weight.

For corn, milo and other similar crops apply two 24 ounce per acre applications about ten days apart after the plant has sufficient about of foliage.

For beans apply two 16 ounce applications per acre about two weeks apart after there is sufficient amount of foliage for good absorption. If possible apply 24 ounces just ahead of the bloom stage.

For cotton we recommend treating the seed either ahead of time or at planting time. Use both our Mycorrhizal fungi and Liquid Humate. If possible, early in the spring apply Concentrate Liquid Humate at one gallon per acre, one gallon of molasses and two quarts of our Gro-Bac soil amendment. When the plant has four leaves apply 24 ounces of Liquid Humate per acre. Follow that with a second application with in two weeks.

In all of the above situations, if only one application is all one can manage to accomplish, the single application will perform very well. We suggest a small test a plot for the second application to prove to your self the benefits of the second application

Improve your success with foliar application. 

Most plants will use nutrients from foliar application more efficiently then being fed through the root system. Studies have shown that on an average less then 50% of the plant nutrients that are absorbed by the roots may never reach the above ground portion of the plant. Studies have also shown that only about 70% of the fertilizer applied to the soil is used by the plant. Just by using a foliar treatment of Liquid Humate the percent of fertilizer the plant can use through the root system will increase. By combining the increased nutrient uptake and the growth stimulation that Liquid Humate provides, yields are increased. Producers are farther finding out that by adding some of their fertilizer needs along with the Liquid Humate in the tank mix, yields are helped even more. Here are a few suggestions to improve foliar applications even better.

Most plants have the highest absorption rate with tank mix of a pH of 5.8 to 6.2. Water in most cases has a pH of about 7.0 which is too high for good absorption. Whether one is spraying with an herbicide or with plant nutrients, a good pH meter is money well spent. To adjust the pH down one may add a little vinegar. Caution is required as it may take less vinegar then one may think. Having too low a pH is just as bad as having too high of a pH.

After adjusting the tank mix pH, one must check the plants that are being sprayed. If the fluid is beading up on the leaf, absorption of the mix is going to be poorly absorbed and results may be disappointing. The addition of a surfactant may be required to allow the plant to become wet by your treatment. Follow the directions on your surfactant label and if you are using other products, follow their recommendations concerning the proper surfactant and usage.

Using a very fine mist or spray may prevent one from seeing the beading up on the plant. Very close examination is required.

In general an application rate of at least 15 gallon of fluid per acre on most crops gives better results over lower applications. This requires more stops to refill and more time is involved, but the results will speak for themselves.

Liquid Humate greatly improves the uptake of other nutrients or herbicides that are being applied. Plants like Liquid Humate and will open up to absorb the Liquid Humate. Whether the tank mix has herbicides or plant nutrients, they will follow the Liquid Humate into the plant and penetrated the plant cells even down to the root ends at a very high rate. Many are able to cut rates by as much as 25% and achieve excellent results. Caution should be used when applying herbicides when non-targeted plants are present. The extra uptake of the herbicide on non-targeted plants may absorb more herbicide then they can tolerate. Always mix a small test in a jar to insure that your complete tanks mix is compatible.

Other plant nutrients may be mixed with Liquid Humate. We suggest a small test to be ran with all ingredients to assure that they are compatible together. Some ingredients may separate or gel up together. If at all possible, use Liquid Humate with other plant nutrients. Liquid Humate will increase the uptake of those nutrients. It is for this reason may companies use Liquid Humate as their base to carry their products in.

General seed application for Liquid Humate

Liquid Humate may be applied directly to the seed in a mist or in a manner in which all the seed is covered and is not too wet.

Another popular method is top dressing directly to the seed as one is planting. Side dressing as one is planting is good also but the plant will for obvious reasons will not respond as quickly to the benefits of the Liquid Humates until the plant comes into contact with it. Depending what one is trying to achieve, from 16 to 64 ounces per acre may be used.


Injecting Liquified Humate or Folic Acid Directly into the Water Bath containing the Seed Germination Cubes is the

most effective methd of accelerating the seed germination , and accelerating the growth of the seedling sprouts .

The diluted Humate mix ratios can be safely tested in-situ , as Liquified Humate and Folic Acid have no Toxic affects

on the plants or seedlings  or seeds. Very low levels Humate are needed to accelerate the seed germination and seedling

propagation .

Folic Acid is the best application for edible plant propagation , as Folic Acid does not taint the color of the edible leaves.

General application for Concentrated Liquid Humate
Concentrated Liquid Humate is great when applied directly to soils that have an organic matter of less then 5%. Soils with organic matter 5% and above will generally have sufficient amounts of natural carbon in them. Concentrated Liquid Humates contain liquid carbon fractions that stimulate the micro life of the soil.

Apply at least from 64 ounces to one gallon per acre before the growing season and another 64 ounces after the growing season. It is best to apply before the crop is growing or before it is planted. Time is needed to allow the humate to work down into the soil to go to work releasing nutrients and conditioning the soil. Fall and early spring application is great for perennial crops. These crops generally develop their root system for the next growing season in the early fall or early spring.

If at all possible do not apply Concentrated Liquid Humate as a foliar treatment. It will be poorly absorbed and may damage the foliage of the plant.

If you have not studied the benefits of the micro life in the soils you should. Concentrated Liquid Humate aids and benefits the friendly micro life in most soils. To boost the micro life even more, add one gallon per acre of molasses with the humate application. We prefer liquid molasses over dry because the dry molasses has a carrier that takes up more room then the water does in liquid molasses. Plus the cost of drying and the addition of the carrier just add to the total cost of the end product.

We also offer Gro-Bac soil amendment which when added with the Concentrated Liquid Humate and the molasses, excellent results follows. Suggested application rate is 64 ounces of Gro-Bac, 64 ounces of Concentrated Liquid Humate, and one gallon of molasses per acre. Apply early spring and late fall. Mycorrhizal Fungi Application

We also have Mycorrhizal products available. Mycorrhizal fungi are friendly fungi found living on the plant root system. These fungi act as root extenders. They draw plant nutrients to the plant to help feed the plant and in return the plant feeds the fungi. The fungi cannot live with out a living plant. The foliar application of Liquid Humate increases the sugar content of the plant. These sugars are the ones that feed the fungi and this will greatly increase the colonization's of the fungi on the roots of the plant. The two work together in a good over all program. Mycorrhizal fungi are known for making phosphorus and nitrogen available to the plant. This product should be applied directly to the soil or to the seed of the plant at planting time. On perennial plants only one application is generally necessary as the living root system will maintain the fungi for years especially if Liquid Humate is used on a regular program. When Mycorrhizal fungi are used with our Humate products the soil nutrient holding capacity increases over time. To achieve the four point program we recommend the following:

Test the soil and determine what nutrients are needed for the crop and yield goal. Develop a plan as to how and when to provide those nutrients. These nutrients may be applied dry, liquid or foliar or all three. You can use commercial fertilizer, alternative nutrients, or organic forms to achieve the total nutrients needed.

The key in good soil structure is making sure such elements as calcium, magnesium, and sulfur are proper. Treating the soil with out the proper ratios or amounts of these elements is like treating symptoms rather then the cause.

Developing the micro life back will help troubled soils maintain proper structure, plus help provide plant nutrients to the plant when needed. To do this, we recommend 64 ounces of Concentrate Liquid Humate per acre, one gallon of molasses per acre, and 64 ounces of Gro-Bac soil amendment per acre. Apply early spring and again in the fall of the year. Each year yields trend to get progressively stronger with this program. If your soil is testing above 5% organic matter, then the addition of Concentrate Liquid Humate is not necessary. The cation exchange of the soil will improve with the addition of Concentrate Liquid Humate.

Foliar application of our Liquid Humate will stimulate the plant to be aggressive in using the above program very efficiently. Treating the seed with both Liquid Humate and Mycorrhizal fungi which will boost the plant even more. Plus, the organic matter in the soil will increase with most grass type corps such as wheat , rye, oats, etc..

General guidelines and cost saving helps.

First, to build a house with out a foundation is not wise. The soil is the foundation to a crop. Therefore, our first concern is to make sure we have a good foundation or have our soil in shape to grow a crop. We can irrigate, fertilize and plant good seed, but with out a good soil for which the crop can develop in our returns may not be what they should be.

The soil is where the majority of the plant lives. If the majority of the plant is below the surface, we can then assume that if we have a good growing environment for the roots, the top growth would be much better. More then 50% of the plant mass is below the surface of the ground. Organic matter is the major single factor to having a good soil that will hold plant nutrients, hold water, make the nutrients available to the plant and so on. Building the organic matter in the soil requires 30 tons of dry plant material per acre to convert into 1% organic matter. This is with the assumption that 1/3 of the total plant material will convert to organic matter. Organic matter in the soil provides the humate component. It is easy to understand why the additions of humates improve the soil both structurally and with improving the micro life of the soil. Soils that have a pH of above 7.2 will benefit from the application of both dry humates and liquid humates. Soils with a lower pH will not respond very well to dry humates. Dry humates must be turned into a liquid to benefit both the soil and the plant. This is done by raising the pH. Low pH soils will respond very well to Concentrated Liquid Humate. By the additions of humates, we can build a temporary environment in the soil that will help the soil respond like it has a high level of organic matter. Applying as much as one gallon of Concentrate Liquid Humate per acre is very cost effective. Plus it is a better choice as compared to applying 30 tons of dry plant matter per acre. If your soil has more then 5% organic matter, then the addition of Concentrated Liquid Humate is not going to benefit, your soil is already producing enough humate on its own.

The questions that producer's have is, "I am limited on the amount of money I can spend, what should I do?"

Soil test is the very first action that should be done. This takes the guess work out of it. With out a soil test it is like driving down a crooked road with a blind fold on.

What should the soil test provide? The soil test should provide the following; pH of the soil, the organic matter, the cation exchange, the amounts of major plant nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, sulphur, magnesium, and the level of trace elements. Next, request with the soil analysis the recommendations according to the crop and yield you are striving for. Many state universities laboratories will give these recommendations. In making this request, the production goals and the type of crop you are going to grow should be included with the soil sample. A production goal of growing the most I can get is not a good goal. The goal must be realistic for the soil and your location.

After the soil test, I have had producers say, "I have done that and could not afford to apply the recommendations!" On some soils that are very low in the basics this is a very true statement. The main reason, if one applied all the recommendations all at once, the response may not be very effective the first year or two any way. You cannot turn a sand hill into dark soil over night. Our motto, "If it does not make a profit, do not do it." We believe we need to work with both what you can afford and the results of the soil tests. From a soil test one can develop a program that will give you the greatest return for the dollar invested.

Most recommendations are only concern with the chemical side of the equation with in the soil. They will give recommendations, as to the amounts of the major nutrients that are needed, but make no recommendations as to improving the organic matter, building soil structure, improving the micro life of the soil, improving the cation exchange of the soil, all of which makes their recommendations more efficient and more productive. If your soil conditions are such that only about 40% of the applied plant nutrients are going to be available to the plant, it is going to increase your production cost and make your bank account fall short. Most universities will admit that on an average, only about 65 to 70% of the applied plant nutrients are used by the plant in average conditions. With the rising cost of fertilizer, it is not very comforting to know that at least 30% of your fertilizer dollar is not going to benefit you. That means a $300 dollar ton of fertilizer is actually costing you close to $400! At 300 lbs per acre that is a cost of $15 per acre that you are throwing away! Not to mention lower yields as well. Our goal is to not only utilize all of the fertilizer you have applied but improve production and profits as well.

Fertilizer companies and many universities say that if you apply all the nutrients they recommend then you will get what the soil needs. If this is a true statement, then the following should be improving; the cation exchange should be improving every year, the organic matter should be improving every year, the pH should be holding its own, the soil structure should be improving every year, plant diseases should be less of a problem every year, but what has happened, the soil has gotten sicker each year. We get so many producers who say that their production, after several years have been declining, where as producers on our program keep getting stronger and stronger production figures and their profits are improving. The soil did not go bad over night, and it is not going to get better over night either. That is why dumping the whole load all at once is not good either.

The organic folks work on the soil, where as the chemical folks work on the plant nutrients. Both are important. The top organic folks realize they must supply at least 30 tons of dry plant material per acre for each growing season. When they do this, they consistently achieve good results. In 30 tons of dry plant material, one is supplying most everything they need. Now, the cost of 30 tons of dry plant material and the cost of applying it is the question? This year, in our area, the worst baled hay we have is $100 per ton. That makes their program $3,000 per acre! But you say, "I can get it free." Well, hauling it in, spreading it, working it into the soil and then adjusting the soil environment to make it work right is not free! The back yard gardener can get enough organic matter from normal household waste materials. But the large scale organic producer has real long term challenges.

The benefits of our program, is to help the soil to be all it can be for the least out of pocket costs, and then stimulate the plant to use what is available very efficiently. Our basic recommendation is to apply two foliar treatments of Liquid Humate about 10 days apart of at least 16 to 32 ounces per acre after the plant has enough new foliage to treat. This is the least expensive. In most areas this can be done with very little cost. This will increase the root production of the plant, improve nutrient up take, improve top growth, and help the plant during periods of stress. If you are making hay, apply 16 ounces after each cutting. Hay producers are reporting faster re-growth on treated hay. If you are grazing, apply 16 ounces every 30 days if you have ample moisture. The amount of plant nutrients that are available in this program will determine the total increase of yield. Liquid Humate will stimulate the plant to grow a great deal, but at the same time we are drawing nutrients from the soil. We need to test the soil to keep up with nutrient up take. When ever possible, apply Liquid Humate directly to the seed, this will always benefit new plants for a fast start.

Our next best cost effective recommendation if the organic matter is low and/or the pH is below 7.0, apply 1 gallon of Concentrated Liquid Humate per acre. Follow this with the above foliar application. Then apply one half gallon of Concentrated Liquid Humate each fall and spring. Soil structure will start to change, micro life will start to regain its self. Each year production seems to improve. Soil test show that the cation exchange will be improving, and some crops will start to increase the organic matter of the soil. Soil pH will start to stabilize and the need for liming as often is less. This application on low pH soils is a quick temporary fix for many problems associated with low pH. This can be done for about a tenth of the cost of liming. However, liming is still our best recommendation.

The best over all program is to do the above but and then add our Gro-Bac to the soil treatment at the rate of two quarts for the first application, then only one quart is needed spring and fall. The addition of one gallon of liquid molasses with Gro-Bac is an excellent program. This really kick starts the micro life of the soil and keeps it headed in the right direction. Every soil has its own micro life that has developed over thousands of years. Many of these micro bacteria are not the most friendly. They have developed a strong resistance to other bacteria and have also developed an environment for them to guard. This is the reason to continue to add Gro-Bac to help steer your soil towards a better soil environment.

When ever possible, it will always pay to inoculate your plants roots with Mycorrhizae fungi. On some crops this will take a bit of doing. Seed treating is the most cost effective method. On perennial crops Mycorrhizae inoculation pays big dividends. The reason, only one inoculation is all that is required to last several years. Inoculated plants with Mycorrhizae will benefit a great deal from foliar application of Liquid Humate. We will only recommend Mycorrhizae based upon each situation.

What is humate or what are humic acids?
Humic acids are found naturally in nature where ever there is organic matter. The higher the organic matter in the soil the higher the amounts of humic acid are present. Humic acid is a very important link in the life cycle of plants and the micro life of the soil. As plant matter starts to decompose it is a result of the microorganisms found in healthy soils. These organisms break down the plant material and while they are doing that they secrete humic acids. When these humic acids are present they start to play a very important role in the cycle of plant life. Humic acid are known as organic acids. In healthy micro environments both short chain and long chain molecules of humic acids are secreted. The short chain molecules are known as fulvic acids. These short chain molecules are very easily absorbed by the plant roots and if applied to the above ground portion of the plant, the plant will readily absorb the fulvic acids. The long chain molecules play a more active role in the soil. Humic acid is also a result of composting of organic matter. Many claim that it is the humic acid that is secreted by the microbes that make compost so valuable to the soil as well as improving the health of the plant. Our source of humic acid is from the Mesa Verde mine in Northwest New Mexico. The deposit is form an old rain forest that did not turn into coal but rather conditions were such that the microbes were able to continue to cycle until a very high concentrate of humic acid was obtained. The Mesa Verde mine is known for its high levels of fulvic acids. Humate may have from just a few percent of humic acids to as high as 70% humic acids. We select only the humate with the highest humic acids for our products.

Are all humic acids or humic extractions the same?
Not all extractions are the same. The biggest difference between one company and another using the same product as we do is the time and care that it takes to make good extractions of the short chain fulvic acids. Time is money, therefore many rush the process. They may have a high level of humic acids but the short chain acids fulvic acids take time to yield the highest level possible. Then there are different compounds that are used to raise the pH. Some compounds actually have an adverse effect upon plants and the soil.

How humates help make producers more money?
By applying humates the plant receives fulvic acid plus short chain humic acids that stimulates the plants that are growing new growth to:
First increase roots. A plant in its fast growing stage or early development will take advantage of the stimulation of the humic acids to grow more vigorous roots.

Top growth is generally noted following good root development.

The increase root development allows the plant to take up more plant nutrients from the soil.

With in a few hours of foliar treatment the polysaccharides will increase in the sap of the plant. Polysaccharides feed the Myorrhizae on the roots of the plant. Mycorrhizae which are little fungi found on healthy plant roots. As the sugars from the polysaccharides increase so do the Myorrhizae. Many soils only allow 1 to 2% Mycorrhizae. When the plant sugars are increased, the plant is able to secrete more food for the Mycorrhizae. The Mycorrhizae will grow around the roots and will reach out into the soil and make plant nutrients more available to the plant. In time (over a period of a few years) these Mycorrhizae will increase in numbers and help change the soil structure to benefit the soil.

Plants treated with Liquid Humate will take advantage of nutrients including fertilizers and will increase the yields of plants. In other words the plants become more efficient with all nutrients including water. Efficient plants are more productive thereby increasing profit potential.

How much of an increase in yield can be expected?
Yield is directly dependant upon the proper levels of nutrients being available. The nutrient that is in shortest supply of meeting its requirement will play the greatest role in controlling production. However, plants will be able to increase and compensate for such deficiencies with the additions of Humates. The same can be said when the question is asked, "How much will the addition of nitrogen increase yield?" Other plant nutrients also play a role in that yield as well. In general conditions, the addition of Liquid Humates will return excellent yields.

Whether one is using a commercial fertilizer program, alternative farming practices or is an organic farmer, the plant has nutrient requirements. In all cases, humates help make these nutrients not only more available to the plant but allows the plant to use them more efficiently. We recommend testing the soil and choose your method of supplying those nutrients for the plant. We have producers who are not adding any plant nutrients to their program only humates. They are getting good yields however we do not recommend that practice.

How do humates help plants energy levels
Fulvic acid contains a very high energy factor. With just a little movement fulvic acid will discharge a static charge. Plants respond to this in a very positive way. Insects seem to leave high energy plants alone. The immune system of the plant seems to work better when energy levels of the plant are elevated.

Why are Liquid Humates gaining popularity?
We have found that plants treated with Liquid Humate have more stress tolerance to shade, drought, and other nutrient shortages. These tolerances are generally very apparent. These tolerances play an important role to insure the success of any program.

Why use foliar feeding?
It has been known for some time that foliar feeding is more efficient in the use of plant nutrients from 2 to 5 times more effective in plant response. Liquid Humate have a chelate effect upon plant nutrients, or makes them more available to the plant. The fulvic acids can penetrate the cell walls of the plant and will draw in the plant nutrients with it. When applied to the surface of the plant, the plant opens up to draw in the Liquid Humate. As it draws in the Liquid humate, the other plant nutrients that are in the tank mix will be drawn in at a higher rate. Two things are happening here; better nutrient uptake by the plant plus the plant is stimulated to grow and use the nutrient more efficiently. Adding Liquid Humate to a foliar feeding program just makes a good program even better! Always test a small mix to insure that all ingredients are compatible. 

What about Liquid Humate and herbicides
Caution should be used when Liquid Humate is used with herbicides. When Liquid Humate is added to the tank mix with herbicides the plant will open up and receive more of the herbicide than normal. This increase uptake of herbicide may have an adverse effect upon plants that are not targeted. Normally one can cut the herbicide recommendation by 20% with 16 ounces per 100 gallons of tank mix and achieve excellent results. One should first test a small mix to insure that all ingredients are compatible.

How do humates benefit the soil?
Humic acids have a very positive effect upon the soil. The addition of humate or humic acids will not benefit very much when the organic matter is above 5%. However, the foliar application of Liquid Humate will benefit the plant a great deal. Soils low in organic matter will also have a low cation exchange. This means the soil has a very poor ability to make plant nutrients available to the plant. Fertilizers are poorly used. The additions of Humates or Liquid Humate will increase the cation exchange of the soil. The micro life of the soil will increase which will help the soil structure. Sandy soils will improve in its water holding capacity and tight soils loosen up. Some toxic metals can be locked up with the humates and will prevent them from entering the plant. Humate tend to move the soil pH to neutral.

What about adding molasses to the soil?
Molasses contain sugars that feed bacteria. If the soil is low in organic matter then the addition of molasses will increase the number of bacteria in the soil. However, molasses does not feed only the friendly bacteria but also the unfriendly bacteria. Which ever one is present at its highest level will increase the most. If an unfriendly bacteria is present in higher numbers they will dominate the friendly bacteria. Since humates are only formed from friendly bacteria, the present of humic acid suppress the unfriendly bacteria, thus allowing friendly bacteria the upper hand. The odor of good soil is not offensive, it has a good aroma to it. When you till good soils it has an invigorating smell to it. If your soil smells like sewage or smells sour your soil may have unfriendly bacteria having the upper hand. Putting molasses on this soil will only increase your problem. However, putting Liquid Humate with molasses will suppress the unfriendly bacteria and allow the friendly bacteria to multiply. It may take time to change the environment with in the soil to overcome the unfriendly bacteria and to create a friendly environment for the good bacteria. Normal rates of molasses is one gallon per acre spring and fall. If your soil does not have a pleasant odor, apply at least 500 lbs of dry 70 % humate per acre followed by one gallon of molasses per acre. Follow that treatment with one gallon of molasses with one gallon of Liquid Humate every fall and spring.

When is the best time to apply Liquid Humate?
To increase yield and to improve the plants ability to deal with stress, Liquid Humate should be applied at the beginning of the season to any plant that is developing new growth. This is generally done when the plant has enough new growth to absorb the foliar application. A second application is recommended about 10 days to two weeks later. The first application will start an increase in root formation. The second application will take advantage of the increase root system and increase top growth. Both applications should be at least 16 ounces per acre. If it is on hay, apply two applications at the beginning of the season as stated above and then apply 16 ounces when there is enough new growth for good foliar coverage after each cutting. Applying a 16 ounce application after your last cutting will pay big returns next spring. If you are unable to apply only once, apply 24 ounces per acre. 

To speed maturity, apply 16 to 32 ounces per acre to a plant that is in a stressed condition or is in its maturity stage. 

What about treating the seed?
The easiest is to apply about one quart down the row on the seed at planting time. This will speed germination, emerge and root development. Coating the seed can also achieve good results. Follow with foliar treatment as out lined above will enhance the total program.

The effects humates have on plants.
The big difference between a commercial fertilizer program and the organic programs is the commercial fertilizer majors on plant nutrients, where as the organic programs whether the organic folks know it or not, they are supplying growth hormones to the plant. The organic folks apply compost or compost tea which contains some fulvic acid and some plant active short chain humic acids. These have an Auxin hormone effect upon the plant. Auxins make plants grow. Then they use fish emulsions. They say, "Look at all the N P & K in there! There is some N P & K but when you only put out 6 gallons per acre you aren't getting much N P & K. But what you are getting is a good load of Gibberellins found in fish. Gibberellins are plant growth hormones. Gibberellins make plants grow. What about Kelp or sea weed extracts? Look at all the trace elements in sea weed? If you are only putting one gallon per acre, there are not enough trace elements to do any good. However, the kelp or seaweed extracts are high in Cytokinins. Cytokinins are plant growth hormones. If nature was balanced, we would have all of the growth hormones present and all of the plant nutrients present as well. The organic folks would improve their results if they tested their soils and supplied the proper nutrients and the commercial fertilizer farmer would do well if they added the natural growth hormones to their program as well.  

Another thing that humic acid can be used for is those with high chlorine or chloramines in their tap water, by adding just a little humic acid, the humic acid will neutralize the chlorine and chloramines rendering them harmless to the microbes.
